The Daily Polish

18 Nov

I’m not usually into nail polish trends, because they are just that. Trends. They’re cool today and passé tomorrow and I tire of them very quickly. Much like many of the dudes I dated in the past.

But on a recent trip to Sephora I couldn’t NOT pick up a bottle of nails inc. magnetic polish in Trafalgar Square. I felt I owed it to my readers to try it out.

See what I did there?

The formula goes on like any other high quality polish, comes in three colours, and the magnetic part is incredibly easy to do. Check out this video to see how it’s done.

The only downside is that you can only do one design. The magnet that comes with the nails inc. polish produces these wiggly designs, but I wonder if you could use a magnet from another magnetic polish brand to make a different design. Like this star magnet from LCN. I think I’d be more likely to use it often if I could switch up the designs.

The Daily Polish: glitter crazy

21 Oct

There were a lot of manicures recently, and they were mostly glitter manicures. It’s kind of like when you discover a new favourite outfit and you just keep wearing it over and over again. No? Just me?

Whatever.

Get your wings: cat eye eyeliner

13 Oct

The girls over at Sweetspot posted this video recently, on how to create a cat eye with liquid eyeliner.

Well. I’ve only been attempting the perfect winged eyeliner look for about a year now. With only occasional success. And my success is usually totally by accident. And on one eye only.

But MAC makeup artist Melissa Gibson gives some truly original tips. Not just stupid tips you find in a magazine, that have been recycled from some other magazine, that you already know and are totally useless and make you say “thanks for nothing!”

For example, we are usually better at one eye. Do the other one first. Because it’s easier to match your good eye to your bad eye.

See? Brilliant.

I tried to employ some of those tips with my new Urban Decay 24/7 liquid eyeliner in Siren. It’s a liquid eyeliner I can definitely vouch for. It stays put, and it’s easy to use even for beginners. I will probably have to get more colours. Like the blue. And the purple. And the pink. Or maybe all of them.

Please ignore my creepy facial expression and judge only my eyeliner application. Not bad, I say. Not bad.

Yesterday, I had two clients and one of them wanted coral polish with gold glitter on the tips. It turned out so well, I told her I was going to copy her. Then she kindly reminded me that I can’t copy something I did myself. Thanks, Amanda. The fumes make me confused sometimes.

So, today I did a badass version with OPI by Sephora Caught With My Khakis Down and Only Gold For Me from the same company.

Totally tubular: Kiss Me mascara

19 Jul

I need help with my summer make-up routine. Despite the 30 degree heat, I still use powder and blush, which is usually melted off by the time I get to work. Help?

Mascara, however, I got it figured out. If you don’t know about Kiss Me Mascara you are missing out. I’ve been using it since I was 17. It’s not like regular mascara. The product claims to tube your lashes. It has a formula that acts more like eyelash extension than a glob of paint on them.  L’Oréal makes a similar mascara, but don’t be fooled. It’s not as good as this one.

And you can sweat with it on, swim with it on or stand on your head with it on. I even read somewhere that it’s the mascara Cirque du Soleil performers used for their O show. Yes. The underwater one.

Pretty sure you don’t need more convincing than that.

It’s hot pink week here at Sometimes Fancy. It started with my lips, and now it’s onto nails.

The base coat is Inglot something ‘er other. They don’t have names. Only numbers. And I’m no good at math. And the glitter topcoat is Sephora from OPI in Only Gold For Me.

Sparkly.

Or as my niece would say, “parkly.”

I already told you about the Chic Prints from Sephora by OPI. They are a kind of decal that covers the whole surface of your nail. Instead of polish.

I recently tried a similar product. Sally Hansen Nail Effects. These are available at the drugstore and cost less than the Chic Prints.

Know what else? They are way better.

While the Chic Prints were thick and paper-y and made me feel like I had taped post-it notes to my nails, the Nail Effects are stretchy and thin and were more like a nylon for your nail. Pantyhose, if you will.

In other news, pantyhose is my most hated word in the English language.

It took me a few nails to get the hang of it, hence the reason I had to polish the pinky finger with Essie’s Midnight Cami, but the excess tips file off easily and they are not cumbersome on your nails. They come off with nail polish remover, which was a bit of a mess.

I much prefer lacquer to these sticker things, but if you’re into it, definitely use the Nail Effects over the Chic Prints.
